A Special Traveling Exhibit from the
Library of Virginia

October 12, 2021—February 5, 2022

To commemorate the centennial of the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment to the U. S. Constitution granting women the right to vote, the Library of Virginia created a special traveling version of its major exhibition We Demand: Women’s Suffrage in Virginia.

The exhibit uses text and images to trace the history of the woman suffrage movement in Virginia from 1909 until 1920. Much of the information comes from the Equal Suffrage League of Virginia Papers and the Congressional Union for Woman Suffrage Papers, both at the Library of Virginia. One electronic interactive uses historical newsreel film and stills with voice-overs of readings from the ESL and CU records.

Several Lynchburg women were leaders in the statewide suffrage movement and are featured prominently in the exhibit.

The Lynchburg Museum is open five days a week, and admission is always free. Plan your visit soon!
