First Fridays Free!

The Lynchburg Museum in the Old Court House is now open for First Fridays with free admission from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. the first Friday of each month. The Art Trolley will drop you off and pick you up at our front door at 901 Court Street as it makes its way between the art galleries, studios, and other places of interest in Downtown Lynchburg. There will be a featured topic for each First Friday and a staff member will be on hand to show artifacts that are not usually on exhibit and talk with visitors. (434) 455-6226 or 847-1867 FREE!

August 13: World War II Fighter Ace General George Loving To Speak at Museum

Lt. General George G. Loving, Jr. (Ret.) will be at the Lynchburg Museum at the Old Court House at 1:30 pm to talk about his military aviation career that spanned 1942 to 1979. Graduating from E.C. Glass High School in 1941, Loving had just entered Lynchburg College when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. Enlisting in the Army Air Forces, he followed his dream of becoming a pilot and flew 151 combat missions in the European Theater in the famous Spitfire and Mustang fighters. Loving became Lynchburg’s first ace in 1944 after shooting down five enemy warplanes. His decorations include the Silver Star, Distinguished Service Medal, and Distinguished Flying Cross.

Following World War II, Loving flew 113 combat missions in Korea in propeller and jet aircraft. Rising in rank, Loving served as Commandant of the Air Command and Staff College, Commander of US Forces in Japan, head of NATO Air Forces in Turkey, and on a number of high level diplomatic and military assignments including negotiations with the Warsaw Pact. He retired in 1979 as a Lt. General and resides in Williamsburg, Virginia with his wife Ambler.

General Loving is the author of Woodbine Red Leader; A P-51 Mustang Ace in the Mediterranean Theater and will have copies of his book available for signing after the program. He is donating his uniforms, flags, medals, and other personal items to the Museum and these will be on display during the program. The event is open to the public free of charge and refreshments will be served.

Curator Greg Krueger will show you how to preserve family treasures-photographs, textiles, silver, and more in this hour- long program at 4 pm at the Museum. Free!!!

September 3: First Friday - Clothing from the Museum Collection with Ann Scalf

September 6: Labor Day

Museum and Point of Honor will be open and FREE to all visitors...

October 1: First Friday - Civil War Artifacts of Lynchburg with Doug Harvey

Oct 2: Day at the Point

Day at the Point offers a look at life in Lynchburg in the early 19th century--house tours, living history demonstrations, batteau, period music, kids activities, food and beverage 10 am - 3 pm. Free Admission!

November 5: Lynchburg Silversmiths with Greg Krueger

November 11: Veteran’s Day

Museum and Point of Honor will be open and FREE to all visitors...

December 3: Lynchburg People in Photographs and Portraits with Rachel Deddens

December 5: Christmas Open House
See Point of Honor decorated for a ca. 1815 holiday celebration with native greens, yule log, and other customs of the period. Noon to 4 pm. Free!!!
